Lungi`s Bed and Breakfast

Khayelitsha Township

Khayelitsha (which means “new home” in Xhosa language) is a rapidly growing township located outside of Cape Town, near the Cape Town International Airport. The population now numbers almost 2 million people and is the biggest and youngest township in the Cape Flats. Khayelitsha, which was created during the Apartheid area as a dormitory for black laborers working in Cape Town, is now a vibrant community with schools, churches, markets, training centre’s, craft displays and community gardens.

About Lungi’s B&B

Experience Shack-Chic
Gladys will warmly welcome you into her house: Lungi’s B&B. Lungi is the abbreviation of Nomalungelo, which means “rights” in the Xhosa language. Lungi’s is a friendly ran B&B, where you will feel immediately at ease and which offers you the unique experience of family life and culture in a South African Township.
Lungi’s Township B&B is located in a traditional township house, which was fully redecorated in 2009. The house stands on an owned plot. Gladys, your hostess, opened the B&B after working multiple years in a B&B at Greenpoint. She runs the accommodation in a welcoming and proud way.

Rooms

The B&B has 3 guestrooms: the Green Room, the Red Room and the Yellow Room. All rooms have comfortable twin beds which can be fit together as needed. The Red Room has a bathroom and toilet en-suite, the Yellow Room and Green Room have the communal use of bathroom and toilet.
Both bathrooms have showers with hot running water. Fresh linen and towels are provided, and the rooms are clean and well lit.

Picture this: A beautiful African village, located on the edge of a ridge in the middle of the stunning Wildcoast. Wake up to an amazing view, have breakfast next to a waterfall and explore the beautiful nature in and around the village.

Get in touch with the people living and working in the village, experience their unique culture and way of living. These people do not have much but live a beautifully peaceful existence.

Enjoy the silence, the wind hushing and touching your skin, relaxing, fire crackling, seeing the Milky Way filled with shooting stars gliding across the nightsky. It will make you feel small and humble but absolutely alive and one with nature.

Accommodation

You will be sleeping in the traditional round huts that are famous for the area. All of the local people also live in these huts and there are almost no other types of buildings to be found in the area.
You can choose to either sleep in a small traditional hut, this hut has a double and a single bed. Experience life in a real African house!
The other option is to sleep in the bigger house. This is also a traditional round house, only bigger then most in the village. The house has a very cosy feel on the inside. Cooking food on the fire, swinging softly on the hanging couch or just fall asleep to the sound of the crackling fire.

The Village

This Tribal Village is surrounded with African Jungle and massive cliffs, situated on a Plateau with a 1.5km long crack in it, forming a short and steep gorge where the African Traditional Healers come to get their medicine, some at the foot of the Sacred 144m Magwa Falls. Sitting here washing your Soul, your feet and your pic-nic bowl, girls carrying fire wood for kilometres passing by, some other do their washing in the river nearby, and boys swimming, herding cattle and coats, then we stroll back, up through the Goso State Forest, spotting insects and plants, 400 or more year old trees colourfull birds in the canopy and some lucky bees. This all makes it easy to breathe.

Africa has called you, this is how it feels to be free. Take it with you, it is for free.

Come listen to your own silence in Deep Dark Africa!

Kwam eMakana homestays are located in the township; they offer comfortable accommodation for families, business people, students, tourists and backbackers groups. Kwam eMakana is a community empowerment project which was initiated in 2003 by the provincial government of the Eastern Cape Province. The focus of Kwam eMakana project is to develop township based homestays which offer a unique experience of African family life, street culture, and cuisine and township hospitality to visitors who come to Grahamstown. Kwam eMakana homestays offers a nice and delicious meals for everyone, meals like lunch and dinner could be arranged in advance by the guests. The Kwam eMakana project is supported and administered from the offices of Makana Tourism.

The National Arts Festival which forms the largest tourism / visitor event in Grahamstown significantly contributes to the sustainable existence and growth of the Kwam eMakana project. Over the years, an increasing number of festival visitors to Grahamstown and including recognisable South African artists are finding Kwam eMakana to be the township hospitality service of choice.

The annual Science Festival which take place between the month of April / May in Grahamstown also plays a significant role in terms of contributing to the number of visitors that are visiting Kwam eMakana. The type of visitor that normally visits Grahamstown during the Science Festival is students.

During this past Festival, a large number of beds in the Kwam eMakana project had an average of 80% of bed occupancy, this demonstrates the successful partnership between the National Arts Festival programme and Kwam eMakana cultural heritage experiential outreach programme.

In a city with an enormously high rate of unemployment, the Kwam eMakana project offers much needed entrepreneurial skills to advance people’s ability to support their families. Without the National Arts Festival being one of the leading players to support the Kwam eMakana project, much of the economic growth in the township would suffer. Hence, Kwam eMakana endorses the National Arts Festival value as an agent which uses the arts and culture to grow and transform our society.

There are presently 54 accommodations (homestays) which provide 174 bedrooms, 132 single beds and 125 double beds.

Pictures courtesy of Jo Anne Goodenough – read more on these Homestays on the Blog By JoAnne Goodenough
