Cape Town, Western Cape.

Meet up with musicians and enjoy the vibe. To get to know the rhythm of a culture you need to get to know the rhythms
of its music. The tour starts at the Distrix Café in Cape Town. Meet at the home of a key master musician. On Mondays you attenda local jam session, on any other day you visit a second musician before we go back to town.

Any seasoned traveller will tell you that to truly get to know the rhythm of a culture, you need to get to know the rhythms of its music. And in Cape Town, that means jazz.
Cape Jazz is a distinctive mix of western and African influences, with riffs borrowed from all the kindred ports of the world, and infused with the indomitable spirit of the Cape people. Forged in the townships in darker times, this captivating art-form has given expression to South Africa’s struggles and joys throughout the lean years and into the fat.
But, like jazz scenes everywhere, the jazz scene of the Cape tends to guard its secrets from newcomers. Finding the hot spots can take time and effort… unless a little Bird tells you where to look.

Featured in the UK Sunday Times, the Cape Argus, and Lonely Planet, our Cape Town Jazz Safari takes visitors right into the fabric of the city’s musical spirit, at the same time giving back to the local music scene. Join us on an intimate evening excursion into the living room of latter-day Cape jazz cats such as Mac McKenzie, Hilton Schilder and Robbie Jansen. Dinner, drinks, and exclusive performances by one of these virtuoso musicians will be followed by a taste of contemporary Cape Town sounds, as we venture out of the inner city to enjoy live jazz at a nightspot, or saunter across town for a nightcap at the home of a second musician.
The tour kicks off at 7pm at the Distrix Café. There can be no more fitting place to begin our jazz experience than here at the foot of District Six, where old-school greats such as Basil Coetzee and Abdullah Ibrahim gave a musical voice to a nation’s heartache and hope.
Under the accredited guidance of a local jazz aficionado, you will then enjoy privileged access to Abdullah Ibrahim’s music school, “M7”. A beautiful collection of black and white photos and an introductory talk will give you a feel for the city’s distinguished jazz history.
Next we move to the home of a key master musician, such as Cape Town’s composer laureate Mac McKenzie. Mac lives in Bridgetown, which was the first coloured township of Cape Town.
After Mac and his family have entertained us, it’s on to our last stop. On Mondays we will attend a local jam session, which typically involves a melange of cool jazz, bebop and Cape Town standards. On any other day, we visit a second musician such as local ivory-tickler Hilton Schilder for a final half-hour of ear-candy.
This is an opportunity to experience a rarefied side of Cape Town. The Jazz Safari puts you in the talented hands of those who make a living from conjuring the city’s soul. You won’t want to miss a beat.

This incredibly interesting tour takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays with a minimum number of guests being 2. Mondays are guaranteed.
It starts at 19:00 at the foot of District Six and will be finished at around 11:00.

Included in the price of ZAR 830,00 are transport, local guide, light meal with local beer / wine, entrance fees where applicable and night cap.

Please read our terms and conditions to inform yourself about our booking procedures.

Cape Town, Western Cape.

Do you want to discover a township from a different perspective?
We offer you a unique and pure township experience. Our focus lies on interaction. We want you to get to know the locals, to hear their stories and to tell them about yours.

Get to know the real Khayelitsha

The tour starts at Cape Town Taxi station where you are picked up by one of the guides. Travel to Khayelitsha, one of the biggest townships in South Africa, like locals do.

There are several options to discover the place.

A tour could contain the following points of interests:

walk around and chat with the locals about what they are selling at the station flee market

Have the taste of Umqombothi, the traditional beer – the beer is served at a locals house and some of the neighboors are likely to join

Golden`s Recycling Project – sit with Golden at his house and he will tell you one of his stories

stroll through the narrow paths between the shacks of an informal settlement and see the children smile at the sight of visitors

Dine at a typical township restaurant

Tell us what you are interested in and we will create a special tour for you.

What makes our tours different is that we walk around and speak to locals. We don’t only sit in a bus and drive through. People that have already done our tours appreciated the natural experience.

The tours end with a yummy and interactive dinner at one of the typical township restaurants.

Prices vary depending on the durance and number of participants.

Generally, tours can be arranged every day of the week and with very short notice, depending on the availability of the guides.

Ask us for more information.

Please read our terms and conditions to inform yourself about our booking procedures.

During this tour you will have the opportunity to see the way local people are working together to transform their communities. There are community-care centres for children, hospices, training programs (see World Changer’s Academy), community gardens and many other projects. Purchase arts/crafts directly from local craftsmen from the communities you visit. You can experience the wonderful sounds of Zulu music. There are some excellent Isicathamiya (like the Famous Ladysmith Black Mambazo), Ingoma (music with traditional Zulu dancing) and African Gospel music groups in the area.

VukAfrica is run wholly by local people from the communities where they live. All income goes directly into supporting the local people with resources and 50% of profits go towards local community initiatives. VukAfrica is helping people to see the real life of Africa – not the life portrayed in artificial tourist “cultural” tour destinations. VukAfrica is also helping to connect the local people to the world at large through local and international tourists. This helps with an awareness of the world beyond the village – beyond what is heard or seen on television, radio, and through the grapevine.

Perched on the slopes of Signal Hill, overlooking Table Bay and Mountain, lays the colorful Bo-Kaap with its cobblestone streets, legends and secrets. This workshop will let you experience the extraordinary cuisine of the Cape Malay community, and gives you the opportunity to shop for ingredients so you can try out your new cooking skills in your own kitchen.

Includes: Cooking course, meal, traditional treat, recipes and a tour through Bo-Kaap where you will explore the most photographed street and the local spices store.

Upon arrival at the home of your local host you will get familiar with the different spices and flavours of the Malay kitchen. You will be told which dishes you will be making during the course and then you will get started.

An example of dishes which could be included in the workshop are roti and samosas. You will first mix the different spices for the curry. Your host will explain you what the different spices are and how much of each spice is needed when you are mixing it. This mix of spices will be the basis for the curry, which you will heat together with all other ingredients. In the meanwhile, it is time to get your hands dirty and knead the dough for the roti. You will experience the technique that comes with making roti.

When the roti is created and the curry is being steered in the meanwhile, you will continue with the samosas. Samosas are very popular in the Cape Malay kitchen and a fun snack to create. It takes some dexterity, but after a samosa or two you will get the hang of it. To finish those delicious treats you will fry them and let them cool down for a little while.

The last part of the workshop that has to be done before you can enjoy the meals that you have created is to finalise the roti. You will knead, swing and roll the roti dough until it has the perfect shape. The only thing there is left to do at this moment is to bake the roti and to lay the table.

Now let’s eat! You can enjoy all the delicious food that you have created. The roti with an amazingly tasteful curry and different samosas. In the end you will get another traditional treat that your host will prepare for you. When your belly is filled the end of the workshop is near.

The workshop will end with a short tour around Bo-Kaap. She will show you the most photographed street of Bo-Kaap and the local spices store, where you will have the possibility to buy the spices you have used during the cooking workshop.

2 Hour tour available on request. Not available on Fridays between 12h00 and 14h00.
Costs: R350 per person
