Your Role as Volunteer

As a volunteer, you play a vital role in our Greening project by helping us plant trees, map and monitor trees, and involving the local community in the conservation of their environment.

As a result of South Africa’s divided past, there is huge disparity between the leafy ‘privileged’ suburbs and the barren ‘underprivileged’ areas. South Africa has one of the highest levels of inequality in the world.

Lack of green spaces in communities is known to contribute to social problems. The Kuo & Sullivan Report, 2001, states: Degradation of neighbourhoods exacerbates poor social cohesion, crime, drug abuse and environmental downfall. Urban greening has been closely linked to reductions in these social ills. On top of this, one in five South African children suffer from chronic malnutrition. Hunger and lack of good nutrition negatively affect concentration, ability to learn and school attendance. Children cannot reap the benefits of education if they are hungry. Planting fruit trees at schools is a good step towards improving this issue. Very few schools in disadvantaged communities, if any, have fruit tree orchids.

During your time at the Greening project you will at least one day be planting trees at schools, community centres, and crèches in under-greened areas around Cape Town. The planting is always done as a team effort together with the children or other community members.

An essential part of this is education. As a volunteer, you will be involved in educating children on the importance of their natural environment, and on how they can play an active role in preserving it. This is an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the South African cultures, to learn from this unique cultural exchange, and to give local children some vital knowledge about sustainable living.

For one or two days in a week, you will be part of a monitoring team that goes out into local communities to check on trees that have already been planted. You will help assess the trees, record information, and communicate with the teachers or community leaders about the progress.

If time allows in the planning than on one of the other days you will be part of a team that goes out to explore new planting opportunities around Cape Town, learn about different techniques, network with relevant people, and spread the message of the incredible social and environmental benefits of trees.

Your mission will be greening and educating children and adults while also learning a lot yourself.

Project Information

The Greening projects mission is to green under-greened areas and combat deforestation in Southern Africa. We plant trees on behalf of companies, groups, travellers and individuals wanting to invest in a greener future and improve the lives of communities in areas affected by lack of resources. On top of planting trees, we strive to make eco-consciousness accessible, fun and popular so that a greener movement is inspired. The initiative started in September 2010 and has since planted almost 10000 trees in over 140 beneficiary schools, crèches, orphanages, community centres, old-age homes as well as deforested areas.

Orientation

Upon arrival, you will be given a project orientation that covers the following:

Accommodation and Transfer

You will be staying at a comfortable guesthouse at walking distance from our Greening project office. You will share an en-suite dorm room with up to five people. (Upgrades to private rooms are available.) You will be close to most of Cape Town’s historic areas, trendy neighborhoods, museums, and markets, so it will be easy to explore the city during your stay. The guesthouse offers a communal self-catering kitchen, a lounge area with satellite TV, wireless internet, and a laundry service.

One of our representatives will pick you up at the airport and at the end of your stay we´ll drop you off.

Guidance and Supervision

Throughout your placement at the Greening project you will have the support and guidance of our experienced Greening project coordinators. Our Greenpop team will be available for any questions, advice etc. You will also have a designated coordinator who will be with you everyday and assist with everything you mightneed on the project.

Your role as Volunteer

Your role as a volunteer will be to assist with the daily tasks of maintaining the sanctuary including hands on care for the animals. You will be involved in the preservation, breeding, feeding and caring of the birds and primates at the park, as well as educational based activities and research into the different species. You will initially work with a park ranger who will explain your role, and over time you will take on greater responsibilities for working at the center. Longer stay volunteers may participate in active roles in the animal hospital, or hosting educational groups around the park.Your role as Volunteer
There are many other activities that you as a volunteer might like to get involved in, including: sports (start a small sport program with kids), art projects, music and singing songs (bring an instrument and teach some kids to play), and various other community initiatives (e.g. recycling, craft development). Wherever you feel your strengths lie is where you should get involved – use your own creativity and work together with your project leader and the caregivers at the care points.

Project Information

The volunteer placement involves working with a number of birds, primates and small to medium sized animals in a local wildlife park. You will be based in Hout Bay, Cape Town at the biggest bird park in Africa which is a haven for wounded, sick or tame birds and mammals. You will be helping to clean out enclosures, set up displays, feed and stimulate the animals, attend to sick animals, maintain enclosures, etc. and will gain hands-on experience while working in a successful African wildlife sanctuary. The park is underfunded and understaffed and the facilities are in need of work and attention– this project aims to care and tend to the needs of the animals at the park, and help with the day to day tasks of keeping the center effectively playing its role plus, where suitable, to assist with research into many areas of interest.

Orientation

Your orientation will start with a presentation by the project co-ordinator to prepare you for your project. You will then be shown around Hout Bay, Cape Town and go on a Township tour through Imizamo Yethu.

Your role as Volunteer

This project is suited, but not limited, to volunteers with prior business, marketing, creative, or corporate social responsibility experience. The business is well structured and the volunteer focus is more on skills sharing between volunteers and staff, introducing new ideas, and assisting in the daily running of the shop or production centre and tasks will depend on the length of stay. Volunteers with particular skills sets can be catered for and roles will vary depending on particular skills of the individual volunteer.

If you decide to join the shark volunteering on this project your tasks might be white shark field research, data Collection, safety and secure check of the cages, shark spotting, bait watching, check equipment and will be taught about basic seamanship. The white shark fieldwork takes place around Dyer Island and other locations where sharks are abundant. Dyer Island (aka Shark Alley!) is arguably the best place in the world to see Great Whites.

Your role as volunteer

As a great white shark volunteer you will work with sharks from both above and below the water. You will observe the behaviour and interactions of sharks around the boat. You will be taught how to get in and out of the cage and how to remain secure and safe once inside it. Participants in the cages are taught to meticulously record their observations of the physical attributes and the behaviour of the Great White Sharks. Shark volunteering is an exciting, divers and unbelievable experience!

Cage Diving with Great White Sharks:

Once anchored in the channel, the project makes use of a specially designed, secure, five man steel cage, which floats on the surface, with divers no more than 1m below the surface. Volunteers will be taught how to get in and out of the cage and how to remain secure and safe in the cage. Cage divers are responsible for recording observations on the Great Whites, including sex, size, markings and behaviour. Diving takes place on a rotational basis on good diving days. The duration of each dive depends on the diver, the number of eco­tourists and the activity of the sharks, but could be up to 20 minutes per dive.

White Shark Field Research Data Collection:

Volunteers will be taught how to collect data in the field on free-swimming white sharks. At sea, you’ll be focused on working with the sharks from above and below the water, observing behaviour and the interactions of sharks around the boat. You will be educated in an informal environment, learning about the behaviour of the great whites, their history and the urgent need for research. You will also receive lectures on their biology, shark attack, current and past research techniques and conservation of great white sharks.

Basic Seamanship:

Volunteers will also be taught basic seaman skills including boat handling. This includes general boat maintenance, packing and cleaning, anchor positioning (deployment and retrieval), cage deployment (attachment and retrieval), knots, general safety and good safe crewing practices. Upon completion of the program, the project provides volunteers with a certificate of accomplishment. The program is designed to train and educate volunteers to a level of competence of a field assistant.

You will be able to go to sea a minimum of every other day. For example a 21 day stay enables you to go to sea at least 10 times. It can be more and they will do their best to accommodate you as often as possible. When on sea it may not be feasible for you to dive in the cage every trip but we will aim to give you a fair chance on cage diving.

Project Information

The project works with students, eco-tourists, conservation organizations and marine resource users (subsistence fishermen, sport divers and dive operators) to gather data on Great White Sharks, correct negative misconceptions about sharks, and stop the needless slaughter of over 100 million sharks annually.

The Great White Shark Project runs out of Kleinbaai, which is just outside of Gansbaai, South Africa – a seaside village located approximately two hours southeast of Cape Town on the Atlantic Ocean coast. The shark trips primarily take place off Dyer and Geyser Islands, about 6 nautical miles (11 km) or a 20 minute boat trip offshore.

The boat anchors in the 6 meter deep channel (“Shark Alley”) between Dyer and Geyser Islands. Dyer Island (larger island) is a breeding ground for Jackass Penguins, Cape Cormorants and Gannets, while Geyser Rock (smaller island) is a breeding ground for approximately 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. Shark Alley is a magnet for Great White Sharks due to this breeding colony of seals, their favourite prey, and is a wonderful area for cage diving as there are reefs, islands, and huge kelp beds which all provide protection from the open sea swell and wind. In the summer months they work off¬shore closer to Joubert’s Dam.

Please note: the cage diving location is subject to change depending on the weather conditions and location of the sharks.

Welcome and induction by a White Shark Volunteering team leader and you got lectures on a variety of shark related topics.

Accommodation and transfer

Volunteers stay in a delightful face brick house situated two minutes from the harbour, which bustles with action and boats as people head out to sea. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the house is very comfortable with dorm rooms, a nice kitchen, a dining area, a lounge with television and video/board games, and an outside entertainment area for those hot evenings.

There is a small supermarket nearby (volunteers usually buy provisions and prepare meals together) and the house is located in a very safe and beautiful area, where you can freely walk around any time of day or night.  Please be aware that Kleinbaai is renowned for its shark – and not its night life!  Nights can be a little quiet but having an enthusiastic group of volunteers that work well as a team both on and off sea provides entertainment in itself.  Couples, friends, and families volunteering together who prefer private accommodation may reserve a double room at an additional cost.

Guidance and Supervision

You will be working in conjunction with a qualified crew member of the White Shark Projects. These crew members are highly trained and know the dos and don’ts so you will be in capable hands.

Your role as a volunteer

Because children truly benefit from a hands-on educational experience, only a certain number of local students (age 10-14) are selected to participate each week. The project welcomes every Monday a new group of 8 local children for one week. As a Volunteer at the Bush School, you will be teaching the kids (basic) English, mathematics, sciences, geography, life skills, educational games and social issues. Another task is to give the children the opportunity to discover and learn more about the nature and conservation. Personal attention is something that they are not used to. That is why they really get the chance to blossom at the Bush School. If you want, and it is possible, the project leaders will also take you on to drives or walks through the camp.

Project Information

The mission of the Bush School is to educate and inspire underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. That means that you help with the education of children and care of wild animals. Each week we invite children from the local underprivileged school or local HIV+/AIDS Orphanage to stay at Bush School. The goal is that children develop skills and passion for the environment and improving their future employment perspectives.  The Project also created wildlife clubs by the children on their schools and mentor these children and support them in the protection of the environment. By working every week with children in the village, we extend Bush School’s impact to a wider population, and empower the children to be role models in their community. This is creating a positive impact in the villages and the country.

Orientation

There will be a comprehensive Introduction on the first day where you meet the project coordinators and learn more about what’s and where’s of the project.

Accommodation and Transfer

Volunteers share a Rondavel (round chalet with thatch roof) or have a room in the main house. The chalets are rustic but comfortable with toilets and shower (hot and cold water). There is no electricity on the farm but light is provided with solar lamps and power with a generator to charge batteries, cameras and computers. There is access to internet at a minimal fee.

All arrivals and departures at Bush School are on a Saturday. We pick you up at Hoedspruit airport or in town if it’s more convenient for you. If you want to arrive a Friday or a Sunday, Bush School can arrange a private transfer for you (This will cost around R 600).

Guidance and Supervision

On your first day you´ll get a comprehensive introduction of the Bush School and about your tasks. You have a daily meeting with the supervisor and if you have any questions or problems you can always contact the supervisor or the Share Africa Travel team.

Wildlife monitoring is essential for keeping track of animal movement patterns, habitat utilization, population demographics, snaring and poaching incidents and breakouts. This valuable information (which our volunteers help gather), has numerous management applications including the planning of successful introduction and removal strategies of priority wildlife species. Experience hands-on what it is like to be a ranger.

Your role as Volunteer

1. Elephant and Rhino monitoring
At the start of August 2008, seven bulls were successfully vasectomised. PGR is the first place that information is being collected on the healing process of this complicated procedure. All the information you will be helping to collect will contribute to the future management of elephants all over the world.  You will mostly be concentrating on the bulls and their behavior towards females and other bulls to determine if the vasectomies have any effect on their social behavior.

PGR was the third location for the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project (BRREP) in 2006. The projects aim is to give the rhino more space to encourage them to breed, thus increasing the population of this critically endangered species. Data such as GPS locations, associations, condition, birth and mating occurrences and behavior are all recorded.

As with the elephant each rhino’s ID cards must be updated on a regular basis, as the rhinos often tear their ears and change their notch patterns. Admin tasks such as data entry of sightings must be completed, and monthly reports get sent to WWF on the progress of these animals.

2. Other Activities
You will help check in on the hyena at their den sites and create ID kits; as well as occasionally putting meat out for the growing vulture population nesting on the property so we them to encourage them to remain in the area. You will also keep track of the herd of buffalo: checking their numbers and looking for any injuries etc. From time to time volunteers may be included in darting various key species to fit new radio collars or to fix any injuries as well as being present at re-introductions of various species.

3.  Monitoring Endangered and Priority Species
As a volunteer, you will act as the monitor’s direct assistant. You will work closely with the monitor, aiding them with the day to day activities of the project.  Daily activities will include the tracking and locating of the following focal species: wild dog, lion, cheetah and hyena. Incidental monitoring of elephant, buffalo and white rhino will also take place as they are seen.

This involves firstly locating the animal by means of radio telemetry, by tracking, or opportunistically. Then various important data is recorded, such as the GPS location, group composition, associations, behaviour and then photographic recordings of the animal for the development of an accurate identikit for identifying individuals. These activities are conducted from a game drive vehicle, driven by the Wildlife monitor. Most of these activities will entail early mornings and late evenings, with a midday break taken in between monitoring sessions.

You will be tracking and locating animals in vehicles and on foot around the 40,000 hectare reserve. You will be taught how to use tracking equipment such as radio telemetry, and be taught other methods of tracking. Information such as behaviour and location will be recorded on each sighting. You will also be responsible for assisting with the camp maintenance.

Project Information

The project takes place in several different game reserves in the Kwa Zulu Natal province in South Africa. Depending on your length of stay will you get the opportunity to visit and work on all three of the reserves.

Pongola Game Reserve
Surrounded by the magnificent lake Jozini and Lebombo Mountains, it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting. Two of the key species here at PGR are the 60 elephants and 10 Black rhino which you will be helping to monitor on a daily basis.  These projects are in collaboration with well known conservation authorities such as the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project and the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund who recently undertook the huge operation of performing vasectomies on seven of the elephant bulls.

Thanda Game Reserve
This reserve is situated in an area exceptionally rich in fauna and flora, boasting not only the big five but over 400 bird species. Over the past few years a number of indigenous keystone species, including wild dog, cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo and white rhino have been reintroduced to the reserve. The endangered species monitoring programme was initiated to assess the progress of these reintroduced species along with getting a handle on the resident leopard and hyena population’s demographics. Eeach volunteer will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to this project while gaining invaluable experience in the field.

Mkhuze Game Reserve
Mkhuze Game Reserve is one of the oldest game reserves in South Africa.
It is situated in the northern part of Zululand and is part of a World Heritage Site, The Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park. The reserve offers an abundance of wildlife including endangered species such as black rhino, cheetah, wild dog, elephant and buffalo. The Wildlife Endangered Species Monitoring Programme was initiated to monitor the progress of the reintroduced endangered and priority species, along with black and white rhino populations.

Orientation

On your first days will you be introduced to the project coordinator, the project facilities and the game reserve. Your days will be spent working alongside a highly qualified and experiences wildlife monitor, giving you the opportunity to learn not only about these focal species but about many other aspects of the African Bushveld, and gain exclusive hands on experience.

The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is unlike most in South Africa or in the world as it boasts an unspoiled natural habitat for leopards, which is extremely rare. The main aim of the project is; to help nature restore itself and transform back to its original state. This is a very lengthy process and after decades of excessive maltreatment by farmers it can take many years for flora and fauna to re-establish itself.

The founders of this amazing project have worked at several different parks, including the Kruger National Park and Amakhala Private Game Reserve. Their main objective is to rehabilitate and conserve bordering farms. They both possess an immense passion for the big cats e.g. Cheetahs, Caracal, Lynxes and Leopards, and have been safeguarding their existence these last years. Currently they have four young animals, three domesticated and four wild Cheetahs in their care, which requires daily training to become independent and skilled hunters and eventually return to their natural habitat.

Besides the Cheetahs, the reserve offers a home to Giraffes, Zebras, Vervet Monkeys, Baboons, 350 different bird species and several types of buck e.g. Kudu, Nyala, Red Hartebeest, Springbuck, Duiker and Bushbuck. Furthermore the introduction of the Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino to the area is planned as well.

Your role as Volunteer

You will be with Jacques on a daily basis. Jacques is a qualified game ranger who works for Amakhala Private Game Reserve. His knowledge of the bush, the animals, and nature in general is immense as his experience working with animals in the wild is unmatched.

• Morning walks (with cheetahs as they hunt)

You will be living in the reserve itself. Your beautiful farmhouse offers two big living spaces, a spacious kitchen, two braai areas, a swimming pool, internet facilities, and a game room. You will share a bedroom with one or more volunteers, depending on how many are there at the time.

The project is run by a non-profit organization and is therefore very dependent on volunteers and extra help. Volunteers will explore the warm-hearted place here and give something back to the poorest and getting insights in the daily life of people with issues as poverty and HIV/AIDS, being able to make a small difference.

Your role as a volunteer

This project is so diverse and challenging. You will often deal with the local community and get acquainted with the circumstances in which 70% of the people in South Africa live today. As a volunteer you should be prepared to face misery and poverty. In this case it is very important that volunteers are independent and mature individuals. There is so much to do for a volunteer.  The Community Care Centre offers the following programs where volunteers can help out and support. For example:

• Primary school: the kids (aged between 5 – 12) need support with reading, writing, social skills, sport. And of course some personal attention.
• Nutrition unit: distributes food parcels to those families on the Care Centre. And help the people  ach day by providing them with a half loaf of bread and a scoop of nutritious soup powder making it possible for them to go home and provide a meal for their family.
• Child support and development: A program of activities is offered each day to the kids, to make sure to stay off the streets and being able to play safely. The kids can chose from a wide range of activities like listen to stories, learn to play the drum or cultural dancing.

In General give love and attention to the people, especially to the orphaned and vulnerable children.

Project information

The Community Care Center focuses on the people of surrounding townships and offers a variety of services; a primary school, afterschool programmes, a clinic, vegetable gardens, feeding and clothing programmes and much more.

The support and help of volunteers is much needed and welcomed by this community center that focuses on helping the very poorest. Missionvale offers a lifeline for those who are in dire need; a daily meal, clothing and some dignity in their struggles for life. Many people are HIV/AIDS infected and there are high rates of alcohol abuse and domestic violence.

Accommodation and Transfer

You will have accommodation in one of the volunteer houses we offer where you will spend your time with other international volunteers. This room will be either private or to share with maximum of one other volunteer if needed. The volunteer houses are usually shared with local and international volunteers and students and often have a swimming pool, cleaning services and are close to facilities such as the beach, bars and restaurant and shops. If this accommodation does not suit your preference you do have the choice to stay with a host family as well.

Your transport is provided and you will be taken from and to the project on a daily basis. The vehicle is also there for weekly shopping sprees and visiting the supermarket. If you want to go out for a drink or dinner by yourself you can use local cab services for minimum costs. We will have weekly possibilities to visit the cinema or other group activities.

Guidance and Supervision

Daily guidance will be given by the coordinators of the different units. There will be also an on-site volunteer coordinator who is 24h and 7 days a week available.

Because it is possible to combine several programs, you as a volunteer can help out in different ways. You can help with the distribution of food, the children in the school, do sports activities, go on home visits in the township, help in the gardens and much more. So there is a plenty of things to do, because in the whole project are 6 units included:

As weekends will be off, things can be focused on enjoyment and visiting the beautiful places in and around PE. We can organize trips to Addo Elephant Park, Kragga Kamma Safari Park, Seaview Lion Park, Baviaanskloof and many more options. Just keep in mind that extra costs apply for any weekend outings.

You can take a surf lesson, do a diving course, go on a Whale and Dolphin cruise or just sleep late after a bit of dancing in the local clubs; all up to you. The Volunteer Coordinator also needs some time off so weekends (outside organized trips) will be focused on relaxing and doing your own thing, maybe even some washing…

The focus is on developing personalities, reducing at‐risk behavior by broadening youths’ options, bridging social divides, increasing health‐related knowledge and awareness, and providing participants with tools to help them make the right choices in addressing and facing social negatives. The project has long-proven the tremendous potential of sports development to positively impact educational aspirations, grades and achievement scores, self‐esteem, self‐confidence, and social connectedness to reduce delinquency and school drop‐outs. Their efforts provide a complement to a traditional mentoring/role model strategy by empowering the young participants to take responsibility and be sustainable change agents within the community. The sports development project curriculum emphasizes ongoing active and experiential learning that includes tactics for the beneficiaries to get the message out to their two core social groups: peers and siblings.

Your role as a volunteer

Placements primarily include providing education and sports development through sports projects, coaching and / or promoting social and health awareness. Alternative non-sports placements include teaching, arts and crafts or working with disabled or HIV/AIDS affected children. Join one of our volunteer coaching placements during your gap year, career break or activity holiday and play and coach sports to keen young players who are passionate about football/soccer, cricket, rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, basketball, swimming and more. As part of the life-skills curriculum, promote good citizenship and impart social / health awareness and knowledge.

You will work 5 days a week as part of a sports development team and go out into the community to teach sports and games to underprivileged children.

This sports development project is aimed at strengthening the psycho-social development of South African youth by creating social and health awareness through participatory education and sports. The sports development project’s mission, to broaden opportunities and provide tools for responsible citizenship, is also accomplished by promoting intercultural exchanges and developing well-defined local projects.

As a volunteer you can coach children and teenagers, play games, interact with them and help them give a view on their future and possibilities. The sports development project’s approach is to encourage sustainable change by motivating the participants to become opinion leaders in their social network of peers and siblings. Research supports the strong influence of positive peer relations, with peer-led groups resulting in significant improvement of knowledge compared to teacher‐led groups. Hence, the impact of the sports development projects goes beyond its immediate beneficiaries to positively influence peers and siblings not directly involved. Furthermore, the activities are aligned with government and corporate interests to strengthen leadership capacities and the capacity of communities through sustainable social change.

You will be staying at a communal accommodation in town. It’s basic but comfortable, dormitory-style rooms with shared toilets and showers. The accommodation has a very sociable atmosphere, so you will find it a great place to relax and unwind in the evenings. It has a swimming pool, a TV/DVD room, a braai area, and lots of activities such as ping-pong, billiards, etc.

The accommodation is centrally located to the placements (5-minute drive to the nearest townships) and not far away from center city (8-minute drive), shopping centers (within walking distance), the beach (10-minute drive), or endless nightlife. It is advised to use taxis or minibus taxis when walking is too far or not safe. Also provided are Internet, a land-line phone, laundry facilities, and 24-hour security on premises.

Guidance and Supervision

Once the project knows where they can use your specific skills you will be introduced to the people who will offer guidance during your period of volunteer work. The project’s director will always be there as a support point during your stay.

Your Role as Volunteer

As a volunteer, you may be working in a para-parental role teaching children life skills that their missing or overwhelmed families are struggling with. At the crèches and orphanage you may work with a local care giver or teacher assisting them and taking on responsibilities as your skills and experience allows. In general you may play three different roles:

1. Teaching – The children at the care points are generally without any kind of education and need the foundations of English.

2. Care giving – Most of the children come from homes where they do not receive much attention; volunteers play an important role in giving the children this attention, playing games with them, teaching them basic life skills and giving them the care and attention they need at that age.

3. Centre development – Volunteers are often involved with painting educational murals, organizing fundraising events, taking children to the play ground and working on income generating projects.

There are many other activities that you as a volunteer might like to get involved in; sports (start a small sport program for the kids), art projects, music and singing songs (bring an instrument and teach some kids to play), and various other community initiatives (e.g. recycling, craft development). Wherever you feel your strengths lie is where you should get involved – use your own creativity and work together with your project leader and the caregivers at the care point.

Project Information

This project involves working with a number of small care centers and crèches in the Imizamo Yethu township of Cape Town. There are a large number of crèches and day care centers in Imizamo Yethu as well as an orphanage that is understaffed, under-funded, and whose facilities are in great need of work and attention. These projects aim to provide care and education for disadvantaged children, many of whom have broken families as a result of poverty and the AIDS pandemic. Some of these are basic rooms attached to small houses others are more organized and developed. All are in need of support.

Orientation

Your orientation will start with a presentation by the project co-ordinator to prepare you for your project. You will then be shown around Hout Bay, Cape Town and go on a Township tour through Imizamo Yethu.

Accommodation and Transfer

You will be based in the Hout Bay, not far from the Angel Starfish crèche. Your sea-view accommodation is walking distance to convenience stores, restaurants, nightlife, and a short drive to Cape Town’s City Centre. In your spare time (you will have more than enough), you can shop, sightsee, or simply sunbathe on one of Africa’s premiere beaches.

An airport transfer on set arrival and departure days is inclusive of the package.

Guidance and Supervision

Your day will be spent alongside a trained crèche teacher. The volunteer program will be supervised by the principal of Angel Starfish, Feroza Moses, who will be more than happy to assist you throughout your visit. Besides this will there also be volunteer coordinators that can be reached 24 hours a day.

Although day to day activities vary on the project, a typical day in the life of a volunteer might be:

07:30 – Wake up and have breakfast.

08:00 – Walk over to your project.

08:30 – Children start arriving at the school from 08.30.

09:00 – School starts.

13:00 – Lunch (come back to volunteer house for lunch or take a packed lunch).

14:00 – You will help with playing activities at your project or you can help on an afternoon project.

15:30 – Work generally ends around 3.30pm but this is flexible and can sometimes be earlier and sometimes later.

You will be off in the weekends which leaves you with plenty of time to explore South Africa further.
