About This Project

The Nodumo preschool is situated in the rural area of KwaMthethwa, near Matubatuba in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The pre-school takes care of many children who have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS in the area and has been in existence since 2000. Most of these children are now raised by aging grandmothers who can hardly afford to feed them.

Nodumo Preschool

Via Abang Africa Trust, the Nodumo crèche has been supported in various ways. Many travellers supported by Abang Africa Trust, come by and support the project with food donations for the feeding programme.Various donations like chairs, cooking utensils and books have been donated over the years as well.

In the beginning the crèche was housed in the local church, with no future prospects. Thanks to generous fundraising organised by individual travellers, Abang Africa Trust together with local RhinoCoast Guest House, has been able to erect a sustainable building for the crèche including toilets. The kids now have a safe and dry place to go with proper sanitation.

There are 40-50 children at the crèche, a monthly feeding scheme is main priority.

Visitors

Must be interested in the education of children.

If you plan to visit please buy donations locally and upfront. Donations can be made in the form of toys, soccer balls, dolls, blankets, food and files for filing.
The Tshepang team of 27 workers and their SEEtrust partners are creating a better future for the underprivileged children and families.

Tshepang

Tshepang and SEEtrust Susan Rammekwa started Tshepang, a program for orphaned and vulnerable children. Susan works with a team of 27 workers, taking care of 230 children, counseling the care takers, providing meal services to fragile people in the community and initiating small economic activities, such as a sewing atelier and a vegetable garden. On the land that was bought, SEEtrust will build a much needed primary school, 10 units for small local enterprises, and 70 apartments to sell. The sale will finance the social facilities and pay back the investors, with a profit.

SEEtrust, Tshepang’s first partner, creates new ways for integrated economical and social development, which enable individuals and communities to improve their lives and future. SEEtrust starts from local initiativesand possibilities and focuses on facilitating and growing these. SEE trust is about SEEing possibilities, TRUSTing people and building entrepreneurial partnerships. To keep the projects sustainable and growing, a strong economical base is created, through combining external investments and donations with local income and through creating a return for all partners involved.

Economical, social, learning and environmental outcomes are generated by integrating as many as possible of the following elements:

Generate income and work

Create affordable and attractive housing

Create educational and social facilities and networks

Reduce ecological footprint

Strengthen local (women) entrepreneurship and ownership

Visitors

Spend a day and experience daily life in an informal settlement, hear children’s life stories, eat with the Tshepang team and see the impact of partnership: the partnership between Tshepang and SEEtrust.

Based in Cape Town, Streetwires is a business with a social mission that is tackling the problems of unemployment and poverty in South Africa. Continue reading →

About This Project

Streetwires recruits unemployed people and through formal training develops them as wire and bead artists. Established in 2000, Streetwires began with the idea that for something as dynamic and imaginative as wire art, there should be a supportive business structure to boost the craft. Streetwires is a fair trade accredited organisation audited by IFAT – the International Fair Trade Organisation – to verify that we adhere to the social and operational regulations stipulated under the IFAT charter.

Streetwires

By providing people with a workplace, permanent employment, a sense of purpose and access to resources like skills training and personal development, Streetwires is helping to improve the life of many formerly destitute South Africans. Focusing on the unique and dynamic genre of wire art, streetwires is providing the skills training, support and raw materials necessary to enable over 100 formerly unemployed men and women to channel their natural creative energies into this vibrant art form.

Street wire art, unique to Southern Africa and largely unavailable beyond our borders, is a living testimony to the industriousness and creative spirit of our people. Born in the shanty towns and dusty backroads and baptised on the streets, today this genre is a thriving and legitimate art form in its own right, with many ‘wiremasters’ making a living selling their creations not only on street corners and at craft markets, but also in upmarket shops and galleries around the world. Like our people, each hand-crafted piece is special in its own way, and each one has its own story to tell, while the scope for training, development and upliftment is enormous. In addition, most wire art lends itself readily to being branded, thereby increasing the appeal of these products for promotional purposes and corporate gifts, an area that Streetwires has pioneered.

In April 2005, with the support of the Department of Arts and Culture, we opened our first Rural Wire Art Centre in the impoverished farming community of Clanwilliam, three hours west of Cape Town. Future plans include establishing Streetwires Centres in rural areas throughout the country, all offering sustainable employment, hope and a sense of purpose to as many needy South Africans as possible, in places where intervention and opportunities are needed the most.

Visitors

The friendly Streetwires Shop is the only dedicated African Wire and Bead Craft Shop in the Western Cape.

This project can be visited individually or in conjunction with a City Tour. Fully Guided Tours of the vibrant working studio offers the opportunity for visitors to chat to over 100 artists and to see them creating the wonderful products available for purchase in the shop. From Mondays to Fridays between 9am and 4:30pm

1½ hour workshop from entrance to exit. This includes a full tour of Streetwires plus a practical workshop session whereby participants are shown and actually create wire art pieces. These pieces can be kept by the visitor. Each participant is provided with tools plus a wire and bead kit. Instructors are allocated to each group to demonstrate the steps involved in making wire art.

Costs

About This Project

The “Recycle Swop Shop for Kids” was initiated in 2003 in response to the bitter reality that many children in the Zwelihle Township, Hermanus were sitting apathetically on the curb side without benefit of the very basic needs. The only thing that the children had access to was the garbage and recyclables that surrounded them. Hence, the concept was born.

Pictures courtesy of Recycle Swop Shop

The Concept

Children can collect tins, plastics and glass bottles to trade for useful and fun things at the shop. Initially, it began with encouraging anyone 12 years or younger to come. If a child is old enough to carry a bag of tins, they can “buy” something at the “Recycle Swop Shop”.

At first, the shop supplied only items of personal hygiene and used clothing. Later, through generous donation they have been able to include school supplies to their stock.

Personal Items: toilet paper, soap, face cloths, toothbrush, toothpaste, towels, underwear

School Supplies: pens, pencils, coloured pencils, notebooks, colouring books, plastic files

Clothes: warm jerseys, t-shirts, tights, trousers, shorts, skirts, shoes

The program operates solely through volunteers, donations from parents, local residents and interested visitors. The swop shop takes place once a week on Wednesday.

Visitors can spend a day at the Recycle Swop Shop Project and get to see how the concept is positively used to help the kids in the community. You will have the opportunity to buy hand made crafts made by locals, in turn, helping them earn a wage.
